We Change Lives, Everyday

The clubhouse model was established in 1948 and is an internationally renowned, evidenced-based, member-led program. Over the last 75 years, the Clubhouse movement has grown and now has an impact in over 30 countries around the world.

At the Gold Coast Clubhouse members and Clubhouse staff work side-by-side to carry out the day-to-day operations of running the Clubhouse.

Gold Coast Clubhouse

Gold Coast Clubhouse is a supportive community of people living with a mental illness who come together to connect, participate, learn, earn, & socialise together.

At the Gold Coast Clubhouse members and Clubhouse staff work side-by-side to carry out the day-to-day operations of running the Clubhouse. Focusing on strengths, potential, and possibility, membership is voluntary and members are supported to participate in the work-ordered-day, build their skills and capacity and contribute to the life and flair of the Clubhouse community. Members and staff work together to develop the Clubhouse program of activities which includes preparing, cooking and enjoying a nutritious lunch daily.

Members are encouraged and supported to participate in a range of tasks and activities to learn like skills, build confidence, capability and work skills, form friendships, and access opportunities for employment and sustainable housing.

The Gold Coast Clubhouse includes members in every aspect of its day-to-day happenings. Clubhouse is designed to be understaffed to highlight the importance and necessity of member involvement in the successful running of the Clubhouse program.

Our approach to support includes contemporary recovery-oriented, trauma informed and person-led practices.

What We Do

The Clubhouse Work-Ordered-Day

The work-ordered-day is a structured and fun program where members can participate in 6 work units:
Through participating in the work-ordered-day, members can engage in a range of tasks and activities to build confidence, practical, technical, communication and social skills. This also helps prepare members for ongoing involvement in the community like open, employment or education activities independent of Clubhouse.

Education & Training

Education & Training helps organise and coordinate activities designed to assist members to engage in study. The practical support offered by Clubhouse helps members to enrol and study courses of interest to them at Tafe, University, or at another learning institution. Members can choose to involve themselves in courses to meet a range of educational goals from numeracy and literacy to university degrees, with the support and assistance of Clubhouse.

Social, Recreational & Events

Members are encouraged to actively share their ideas for inclusion in the Social, Recreational & Event Calendar. Occurring at night and on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays (including Christmas Day) members have the opportunity to participate in social & recreational activities and events both in the community and at Clubhouse. This provides an opportunity beyond the work-ordered-day to have fun, develop friendships and make new memories!

Impact

Clubhouse is a fun and supportive community because members understand and care about each other. Member’s provide phone calls, emails, letters, hospital and home visits to other members. This member-to-member outreach, ensures members receive unconditional support and remain connected to the Clubhouse community.

Housing

Housing assists members with accessing and maintaining accommodation. This support and assistance is provided by both the Clubhouse support crew and members. Assistance can include networking with existing accommodation agencies and private landlords to find affordable housing. Clubhouse can also assist with the logistics associated with housing and moving including tasks such as:
  • Help in communicating with real-estate agencies & landlords and tenant advocacy services
  • assistance to attend property viewings and apply for rentals
  • locating furniture
  • accessing bond loans
  • moving furniture
  • creating budgets
  • sustaining tenancies
Clubhouse also aims to have opportunities for affordable, safe and dignified housing available for members but does not receive funding to offer housing support.
